On Thursday, June 29, at 2:06 p.m., Officer Troy Grams observed a boy walking in the 600 block of New York Avenue.
Grams observed what appeared to be a handgun in the male’s waistband.
Grams entered a convenience store to investigate further, and the male was standing at the counter.
Upon seeing Officer Grams, the male immediately left the counter and attempted to flee through an employee area towards the back door, police said.
Officer Grams attempted to stop the male from running out of the back door when he was pushed away.
Officer Grams managed to grab on to the male as they exited the store and attempted to place him in custody, but the male resisted these efforts while continually trying to reach for the handgun in his waistband.
During a lengthy struggle, the male bit Officer Grams causing an injury to his hand, police said.
With assistance from Officer Eric O’Neill-Knuttel, the male was ultimately placed in custody.
While resisting arrest, the male’s loaded handgun had become dislodged from his waistband and was recovered from inside of his pant leg.
The youth was charged with unlawful possession of a weapon, aggravated assault on a police officer, obstruction of justice, and resisting arrest.
He was remanded to the Harborfields Detention Facility.
